“The Town of Georgina recognizes and acknowledges that we are on lands originally used and occupied by the First Peoples of the Williams Treaties First Nations and other Indigenous Peoples, and on behalf of the Mayor and Council, we would like to thank them for sharing this land.  We would also like to acknowledge the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our close neighbour and friend, one with which we strive to build a cooperative and respectful relationship.


We also recognize the unique relationship the Chippewas have with the lands and waters of this territory.  They are the water protectors and environmental stewards of these lands and we join them in these responsibilities.”

Council received the Memo surrounding the Committee's desire to sponsor three lunches through the Good Food Collective and approved the funds to be used from the 2024 budget.

On June 5, 2024, the Committee will be sponsoring a lunch with the theme of "Pride", alongside York Regional Police and Georgina Pride.

Patti White to provide update to the Committee.

Host location will be the Town of Georgina Civic Centre for the flag raising, followed by a celebration at the ROC chalet. 

Motion for Council to endorse the Pan African Flag Raising Event with an expenditure of up to $2,400 coming from the Committee's 2024 budget. This will cover entertainment and honorariums for the event.

Patti White and Mayor Quirk to discuss upcoming events across Georgina and York Region.

We Belong Pride Breakfast happening with York Regional Police on June 4, 2024. 

Pride Flag raising event happening June 7th, 2024 at the Town of Georgina Civic Centre. 

York Pride parade is Saturday June 15, 2024 at 3:00pm, on historic Main Street in Newmarket.

Discussions surrounding securing a Speaker for National Indigenous History Month, the 94 Calls to Action, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and training available to Committee Members. 

Staff to request a speaker from the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation attend the GEDAC Meeting in June or September.

Discuss incoming requests for use of 2025 Committee budget.

Paul Connors, Host of Music in the Streets Festival, reached out to inquire about Committee support from the 2025 budget. 

Councillor Biggerstaff brought forth the idea of a large community event for 2025 which would showcase different cultures and communities throughout Georgina. Committee to continue to work through this concept and see at what scale they can promote this potential event.
